Satur denounces attack against striking Triumph workers

Bayan Muna 2010 senatorial bet and Nacionalista Party guest candidate Satur Ocampo denounced the violence that erupted this morning (May 6) at a strike of a big undergarments company in Pasig City and called on the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to immediately act to prevent further violence.

Workers of Triumph International, who are on strike against the factory’s illegal closure, were attacked by some 100 security forces of Food Terminal Inc. where the factory was located. The security forces demolished the picketline and destroyed everything within the picketline. They also manhandled five unionists of the Bagong Pagkakaisa ng mga Manggagawa sa Triumph International (BPMTI) and shoved them out of their union office.

The security forces used a Pasig court’s temporary restraining order against the strikers dated April 23 to justify the attack.

"The DOLE should lay down sanctions against the company and demand that the FTI cease and desist from attacking the picket line. The labor department should instead help h Triumph workers who for years have been forced to work for low wages and benefits. Incidents of violence against workers and their rights to unionize, strike, and seek redress against grievances disprove government assertions that there is industrial peace. We must give aid to our workers and put an end to the abuses of employers," he said.

Ocampo also said that the Labor Code should be amended to strengthen and protect the rights workers working in export processing zones and industrial enclaves, as well as those working in transnational corporations.

"These TNCs and MNCs should be made to respect the rights of their workers -- they should not be exempt from sanctions. They already profit from the industry of Filipino workers who in turn suffer under an exploitative wage and benefit system," he said.

The Swiss-based company illegally closed its factory in the country in August 2009, causing the lay-off of over 1,600 workers. In a joint complaint dated Dec. 3, 2009, Filipino workers and their counterparts in Triumph's factory in Thailand brought the issue of illegal and unjust layoffs before the Swiss OECD National Contact Point, a complaint center for transnationals.
