Ligalig
Portraits of human insecurity and public unrest
An exhibit of 8x10" photographs, July 15 - August 2, 2008
An initiative of Artist's Arrest, Southern Tagalog Exposure and Kodao Productions
Ligalig portrays local contradictions in anticipation of the State of the
Nation Address on July28. Conveying an image of the nation, its actors,
feats, and challenges is each time serious, but all the more pressing
in times of severe crises. In Ligalig, the testimonial authority of
photography challenges artists to be direct witnesses to the everyday
life of the Filipino people, to the actual state of the nation.
Established and emerging photographers create in multi-voiced fashion, a broad
scenario that is collectively empirical. The foci are obvious and
glossed over issues that plague the country. While human insecurity is
depicted in the threat to life and dignity of the masses, it also
celebrates the agency of Filipino people to negotiate these issues and
work towards their ideals. Ligalig, or unrest, therefore also signifies
the movement and struggle of the people.
