Germany sends relief to Sendong survivors

Germany, through the efforts of the humanitarian aid agency Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe (DKH), sent relief aid worth Php 14.2 M to the survivors of Tropical Storm Sendong (Washi) in the Philippines.

More than 1,000 people were killed when "Sendong" ravaged Northern Mindanao and Central Visayas on Dec. 16, 2011. Floods and landslides washed away houses and infrastructures, leaving thousands of families homeless.

DKH, a member of the ACT (Action by Churches Together) Alliance, the global alliance of churches and aid agencies, donated 82,895 Euro for the relief efforts. The humanitarian organization has also sourced-out funds from the German Federal Foreign Office to help respond to the emergency situation.

The German Government donated 166, 676 Euro to fund non-food items like laundry soap, water containers, sleeping mattresses, blankets and sanitary napkins for 12,270 families in Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City, the areas most affected by the storm.

DKH on the other hand will shoulder the assistance for food items such as rice, mung beans, dried fish, sardines, cooking oil, and sugar for 5,665 families in the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte and Negros Oriental.

Relief Delivery Operations will be undertaken by the Philippine NGO Citizens' Disaster Response Center, and its Regional Centers Panday Bulig (PB) and Center for People's Resources and Services (CPRS), starting December 29, 2011.

Caritas Switzerland assists disaster-affected areas

Caritas Switzerland, a Catholic social service agency, sent funding to the disaster-stricken areas in the Philippines following the massive destruction brought by Tropical Storm Sendong (Washi) last December 16, 2011 in Northern Mindanao and Central Visayas.

Thousands of families were left homeless after floods and landslides submerged and destroyed villages, and killed more than 1,000 people.

Caritas Switzerland immediately pooled together funding amounting to 166,050 Swiss Francs (Php 7.7 M) from various sources: Swiss Solidarity, City of Geneva, Caritas Luxembourg, Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Caritas Austria in order to send relief aid to the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, and Negros Oriental.

Relief packs containing 10 kg of rice, 1 kg mung beans, 1 kg dried fish, 6 cans sardines, 500 ml cooking oil, 1 kg sugar, 1 bar laundry soap, water container, mattress and blanket, will be distributed to 4,605 families in 17 communities in the most affected and least-served areas.

The Philippine-based NGO Citizens' Disaster Response Center (CDRC) and its Regional Centers, Panday Bulig (PB) and Center for People's Resources and Services (CPRS), will implement the Relief Delivery Operation.  #
