Zumel Center Pays Tribute to a People's Voice
GREGORIO "Ka Roger" ROSAL: A True Voice of the People
The Antonio Zumel Center for Press Freedom expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and comrades of Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal, spokesperson of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), who died of heart failure last June 2011.
The Zumel Center at the same time, pays tribute to Ka Roger for being faithful to the ethics of journalism as a media person, broadcaster and propagandist.
Ka Roger was an effective broadcaster and a voice for the movement he spoke for. By being truthful, objective and simple as spokesperson, Ka Roger upheld the values of fair play, objectivity and truth, endeared himself to, and gained the respect, not only of the movement he represented, but also the mainstream media and the public in general.
He upheld principled journalism by not resorting to name-calling, false accusations, blatant lies and sensationalism. By citing facts and figures and the situation and experience of the people, he explained the big political, economic and social issues in simple terms that even the ordinary peasants in the countrysides could understand.
Ka Roger was a favorite source of news on the revolutionary movement of the broadcast media, making himself available for interviews on raging issues, despite personal security considerations.
While joining Ka Roger's family, friends and comrades in mourning his loss, the Zumel Center pays tribute to his fine examples and encourages others to emulate Ka Roger's qualities of a true voice of the people.
