Leonard Co, Sofronio Cortez and Julius Borromeo were killed last November 15, 2010 in Manawan-Kananga Watershed in Leyte while conducting biodiversity research. The 19th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army said that the three were hit in a crossfire between government troops and the New People's Army. But survivors said there was no gunfight.
